The Mongols of Montebello California
The second Motorcycle Club in our series are the Mongols. They hail from Montebello, California. They were originally formed by Hispanic Bikers. They were rejected by Hells Angels because of their race. Hells Angels only accept white members.
The insignia on their jackets consists of two parts. 1)Their name in black letters. 2) An image of a man with a pony tail and sunglasses brandishing two swords. The club has chapters mainly out west. But there are a few international chapters also. The clubs outside the USA are in Canada and Italy. Mexico has chapters also. Several other countries around the world also have chapters. See a more complete list below.
The Mongols also go my other names. The Mongol Nation and The Mongol Brotherhood are two other names they go by. There are probably more than 1500 members around the world. This number will grow over time. Especially as more international chapters are added and membership grows.
The club has many ties to organized crime. The club denies the ties. Nevertheless, they are suspected of conducting a number of illegal activities. Here is a list of illegal activities.
- illegal drugs dealing and trafficking
- money laundering
- murder and assault
Attempts have been made to improve their image. The club has enforced new conduct codes. They prohibit the “drug abusers” and “criminals” in their ranks.
There have been several sting operations over the years. The stings have resulted in dozens of members being arrested. Many of them were convicted. As a result some member can not wear their insignias. They are prohibited by law to even wear patches.
The Mongols have clashed with Hells Angels. In 2002 the two clubs clashed in Laughlin, Nevada. Two Hells Angels were killed. One Mongol was left dead. Video shows that a Hells Angel started the fight.
